Nightlife Town Hall Meeting ::: Thursday, February 4

|

Help defend your nightlife.  It is urgent that we get as many supporters of the "City That Never Sleeps" at the Nightlife Townhall Meeting, sponsored by state senator Daniel Squadron.  Memebers of the New York State Liquor Authority, New York Police Department, and elected officials will be present, which is why we must show our unity and support to help maintain a vibrant nightlife.  There will be plenty of people at the meeting who are against our industry - we need the numbers to show the authorities that the people of New York support their nightlife.

In addition, one of the new candidates we supported in the primary, Karen Koslowitz, won her primary and now needs your vote in the general election in her Queens District.  So take a look at the list below of NPC's endorsed candidates and vote for them on Tuesday. This may be an historically low voter turnout election, so your vote really counts!

Primary Election Day is here - Tuesday, September 15!!!

Primary Election Day is Here - Tuesday September 15th!!!
Now, more than ever, it is a critical time for nightlife patrons, employees, owners, sympathizers and their families to stand up and help preserve our nighttime economy and nightlife culture here in the City That Never Sleeps.  We are under attack from the  "Not in my backyard" residents (the NIMBYS) who want to turn our Big Apple into Cleveland on the Hudson. Now you can do something to make your voice heard.  Not satisfied with their assault on Manhattan, they are now turning down licenses in Williamsburg and other areas of Brooklyn as well as in Queens.  No neighborhood is safe.

We have identified a few critical races with candidates who have a history of being pro small business and friendly to the concerns of responsible nightlife.  These primaries in effect decide the election because whoever wins the primary generally wins the election in November.  So the primary is the key voting day (unless there is a "run-off"...in that case, we'll update you).

Support and vote for these candidates:
Now is the time to stand up and make a difference to help preserve nightlife. Please do your part.

David Yassky for Comptroller
Eric Gioia for Public Advocate
Bob Zuckerman for Council (Brooklyn's 39th)
Karen Koslowitz for Council (Queens 29th)

In addition to the above four key races, please get out and vote for the following elected officials who are seeking reelection if you live in their districts:

Manhattan
Borough President Scott Stringer
City Council Member Chris Quinn
City Council Member Gail Brewer
City Council Member Jessica Lappin
City Council Member Dan Garodnick

Queens
City Council Member James Gennaro
City Council Member Peter Vallone, Jr.
City Council Member Leroy Comrie

About The Nightlife Preservation Community

Nightlife Preservation Community (NPC) is a group dedicated to defending and preserving the nightlife industry as an integral part of New York’s cultural fabric. NPC was founded in 2009 under the umbrella of New York Nightlife Association (NYNA) in order to combat challenges that not only affect the nightlife and restaurant industries, but the many individuals and businesses that rely on nightlife for significant income.

The nightlife industry in New York City directly employs over 20,000 people. Hundreds of thousands of New York residents enjoy this vibrant scene, millions of tourists partake in nightlife, and talented and productive young people factor nightlife into their choice of which city they will call home.

Restaurants, bars and nightclubs are being threatened by special interest groups and unjust and unproductive laws that promote an anti-nightlife atmosphere. Whether you work in the industry or reap its benefits, NPC needs your help to keep New York City culture and nightlife alive.

As a nightlife preservationist, you will have access to important information about political candidates who support and understand the importance of a vibrant New York City restaurant, bar and nightlife economy. We need your support before the "city that never sleeps" turns into just another sprawling bedroom community.

Browse our website to learn more about the issues that threaten nightlife, the political candidates that will help in our fight, and the benefits to joining our community. We need to protect jobs and protect New York's vibrant hospitality industry.

A major goal of the NPC is to awaken you, our colleagues, our employees and our patrons to the importance that State and local elections play in the way we earn our living, support our families, pursue our dreams and socialize with each other.

In the coming months, the NPC will direct your attention to elected officials and candidates for office that appreciate the social, cultural and economic importance of dining, socializing and nightlife. We will ask you to vote for them and to contribute what you can afford in time or dollars to their campaigns. Later this summer, look for our list of official endorsements for the upcoming September 2009 Primary elections. If you are not registered to vote, we will get you the information you need to have your voice be heard. Those primary elections will determine who will be in office and who will be passing laws that effect your life.

It is time to get off the sidelines. No more "how did this law get passed?" after the fact. Especially in city and state elections, your vote can actually impact the results.
